While many people prefer the softness of carpet over other flooring types, they fear that carpet can be too high maintenance. With just a few simple preventative steps, your carpet can continue to look great year after year.
1. Choose the carpet that suits your lifestyle
This is the absolute number one consideration that will save you the most time, effort and money! If you have a busy lifestyle that doesn’t permit you to vacuum as often as you should, or you know you’re never going to enforce a no-shoes indoors rule or perhaps you have a much loved family pet that spends a great deal of time indoors, then choosing a carpet style, pattern and colour that will be more forgiving is a better option than choosing a carpet purely for its decor factor.
With so many options available, you’re sure to find the right solution that not only looks great, but allows you to sit back, relax and enjoy your carpet.
2. Vacuum regularly
Regular vacuuming prevents dirt and dust particles from embedding themselves deep within the pile where they can contribute to premature wear and tear. The more often you vacuum, the easier it is to remove these particles leaving your carpet looking and feeling fresh.
A weekly vacuum is generally all that is needed however it is highly recommended to vacuum a little more often in high traffic areas.
3. Treat spills immediately
Although this may seem obvious, its worth its place here at number 3. The longer a spill is allowed to remain untreated, the harder it is to treat and remove and therefore there is a much greater chance it could leave a permanent stain.
Save yourself time and effort; clean any spills as soon as possible.
4. Clean your cleaner
Cleaning products used for treating spills can often leave their own residue behind that can become a magnet for dirt too. After treating your spill, fully rinse the carpet to clean away any cleaning product residue.
We also recommend giving your vacuum cleaner a little TLC as well. Emptying the contents often and ensuring that the filters are clean and in good condition will have your vacuum working at its most efficient giving your carpet the best clean it can.
5. Get a periodic professional clean
No matter how good your vacuum cleaner is, a professional cleaner will always do a better job. A professional clean once every 12 -18 months not only gives your carpet a fantastic clean that removes deep dirt and stubborn stains, it can also provide ongoing protection against germs, bacteria and mould.
